December 2014

Give Yourself the Gift of Reflection

December is the perfect time of year to take a few moments and reflect on the past twelve months.  We move so fast throughout the year, that it's easy to overlook all that we’ve accomplished or learned to help determine what might be possible for 2015.

It takes just a few moments to reflect back and explore a few simple questions.  Grab a notebook or journal to see if answering the questions below can help you celebrate and recognize your accomplishments to identify what you want to do differently in the coming year. Just scheduling a few moments over the next few weeks to do this reflection may offer you insight you might not otherwise recognize.

One of the most powerful ways I coach leaders and executives is to ask them STOP for just fifteen minutes each day to reflect on the goals they’re trying to accomplish that week to make sure they’re not caught up in the daily fire drills. These concepts are fully explained in my book, Simple Shifts.

Reflection Questions

As you think about your most significant experiences in the past year, explore the following questions:

  • What are you most grateful for in 2014? What were your successes and accomplishments?
  • What were your key lessons learned?  Which lessons will you take with you in 2015?
  • How are you different now than you were in December 2013?
  • What do you want to close out in 2014? What’s been completed? What is no longer a priority?  What can you let go of?

As you think forward to 2015, reflect on these questions:

  • What do you want for yourself in 2015? (Less stress? More balance?  Better organized? A higher income? Communicate more effectively? Develop into a more effective leader?)
  • In what areas of your life do you want to place more focus?
  • Who do you need to become to accomplish your most important plans or goals?
  • What will you look forward to celebrating in December 2015?

As you spend these moments reflecting, pay close attention to your self-talk. What do you repeatedly say to yourself that might prevent you from reaching the kind of success you desire?

As you celebrate the holidays with your family and friends I hope you’ll take time to stop and give yourself the gift of reflection.   And… if you find you need a thought partner to help you move forward with your goals, give yourself the gift of a great coach!

Enjoy the Holidays!
