Growth Doesn't Have to Hurt (or be Hard) 

It’s the working title of my upcoming book, scheduled to be published this fall.  Though I’m also considering other titles like, Comfortable Change or Shifting Gears.  Yes,  I’m writing a leadership book based on the encouragement of many clients over the past three years.  Since I work with leaders to make simple, positive change, the book is focused on simple strategies to increase leadership effectiveness.

A Different Leadership Book...

While there are thousands of books on the market today about effective leadership -  this one will be different.  It’s all about making small changes that can create big impacts and great results! No leadership theory or “must do’s”.  Instead, just simple, practical steps leading to self-awareness and personal growth.

Through client and personal stories I will guide readers through a journey of self-discovery and exploration complete with simple tools and exercises I have used with clients to help them overcome challenges, maximize their strengths, and achieve important growth that doesn’t have to be painful.   It’s a practical guide for leaders at any level who want to elevate their impact on others by making small personal changes.  You will likely see aspects of yourself in their stories, or you’ll know someone with similar characteristics.

What I have learned over the years is that when we begin to make just one small, simple focused change, it creates a ripple effect that is often surprising as it opens us up to new possibilities and even greater personal success.  My hope is that this book will encourage people to discover those opportunities to maximize current abilities and recognize important blind spots.

Small Change Story

Here’s one example of a small, important change that I’m including in the book.  Dan was a talented financial analyst but he micro-managed his team, struggled to listen, and was always “right”.  His relationships with his team and peers became strained.  Then I discovered his volunteer work in coaching kid’s sports leagues.  He was loved by all the kid’s families, providing just the right level of guidance and structure.  It was as if there were two Dan’s.  

We looked at the ways he worked with the kid’s teams, and how different it was from the way he managed his work team.  He started to recognize how to integrate “coach Dan” into “manager Dan”.  

As Dan gained clarity with his self-awareness, he began to increase his self-confidence with his truly authentic style – the one that worked!   He said that once he realized he didn’t need to be “two” people, he was much less tired and stressed at the end of the day.  One small shift toward Dan’s best self changed everything for him. Gain without Pain

Based on my client results and my personal experiences, I know that it’s possible to make important leadership change through a simple process that creates positive significant growth that doesn’t have to hurt or be hard.
